"Jack has now been with me for a month, and I love him as much as ever. He is still a very quirky and timid boy, but he has settled in.
His habit of wanting to sleep under a blanket was not just shelter behavior. Unless he is sleeping next to me - which he is always welcome to do — he burrows under bedspreads to hide when he naps. I can always find Jack by looking for a lump in one of my bedrooms.
His meow is a high-pitched squawk that would wake the dead and in fact he woke me at 5:30 am today and led me downstairs to show me he had just peed in one of his litter pans and wanted it changed—immediately! Because his litter box has to always be pristine, he has two of them or else he occasionally misbehaves. While I changed the litter in the first box he promptly pooped in the other clean box, so I changed both at 5:30 am. Spoiled much?
He does bring me gifts every night— the ones I appreciate are his toys. You heard about the first dead mouse. There was a second, brought to my bed two weeks later, and that poor little thing was decapitated. I now have Havahart cage traps in my basement and peanut butter bait so any future mouse can find safe refuge if it is quick enough! I have yet to ever see a mouse in my house except for the two he hunted.
He is an independent little guy. When he wants company he can be very loving. When he doesn’t, he doesn’t. That is fine with me. He seems to have been through a lot in his life and needs some down time.
My vet at OAH said he was in very good health other than being too heavy and needed to go from 14 1/2 lbs to 13 pounds. Your medical report indicated he was too heavy too. He is now on a prescription diet that he loves and is already down to 14 pounds. My house is on 5 floors so he gets exercise just running up and down the stairs, which he enjoys.
Other than hunting (eek) and getting me to wait on him, he loves his scratch lounge and his big basket of toys.
He is by far the quirkiest cat I have ever had, and I have had many. I have a very quiet home but the tiniest thing — the ping of an incoming text message on my phone even if he is in the next room - will send him into hiding. He has obviously had a tough life. But he is also very sweet, very smart, and I love him very much, of course!
So, thank you for trusting me with Jack. In his own quirky way, he is good company and makes me smile all the time."
